SAN FRANCISCO: Intel Corp. announced plans to open its fifth factory in China for assembling and testing computer chips, expanding its presence in the world's fastest-growing major economy.
The new facility will be located in Chengdu, in China's western Sichuan Province, and is expected to begin operation in early 2007, the world's largest chip maker said in a statement. Construction will start later this year, it said.
Intel already has three assembly and test facilities in the Shanghai area and its first factory in Chengdu is under construction.
Intel manufactures its chips in the United States and Europe, and assembles and tests the chips in Costa Rica, Malaysia, the Philippines and China.
