A friend of my parents jumped out the window (six stories up), bounced off the tram wires, landed on his feet in the middle of the street (in his pyjamas) and climbed up six flights of stairs, back to his apartment. Never tried suicide again.

Even better: a female aquaintance found her husband packing his bags. He was leaving her for another woman. She begged, she pleaded for him to stay, but he would have none of it. He walked out; she jumped out the window and landed on him as he was walking out the door. Killed him outright; she ws fine and didn't have to go to jail.

The uncle of a friend tried to kill himself five times -- three times in a Volvo. Survived each time and finally gave up trying to kill himself. Then one day, he was screwing in a light bulb or something; fell off the ladder, and died instantly.

Problem is, being a fatalist doesn't seem to go with modern technology. Clearly, you don't necessarily get to go when it's time to go.....so....

....the only good thing about the Schiavo case is that I decided to make a living will so that nobody has to deal with any of this for me. It will be set out in black and white. Perhaps the Schiavo case will inspire a lot of people to do the same--one way or another. I personally would rather die in a ditch than in a hospital. Being in a vegetative state in a hospital seems even worse than dying in a hospital.

The only thing that bugs me is the need to be buried in a coffin. I fail to see why you don't have the right to become fish food or worm food. That's what I'd really like to have a choice about, but apparently you don't get that choice. They say it's for sanitary reasons; but I don't buy it.
