It may be relevant, and un-PC to point out, that all
the really horrifically failed states today --
Afghanistan, Tajikistan, places in Africa, Chechnya
from 1992 to 2002 or so, maybe Pakistan somewhat --
are tribal or kinship-based societies with little or
no sense of national identity that trumps the merely
local and unites the collective peoples into an "us."
They don't seem to do well under modernity. (I suspect
that Iraq may be like this as well, but that that was
kept under control by Saddam's boot.)
