A friend of mine - a naturalized US citizen - is married to a woman from Uzbekistan. If she returns to Uzbekistan, she's likely to be boiled alive, or shot, or something like that, because she's a journalist who's written critically about the regime. But the INS is telling her she's got to go back there for two years before she can re-apply to come here. Appeals are underway, but it's really messy.
Doug --
Could she go to another CIS state? Uzbeks can get Russian visas pretty easily, at temporarily. Or somewhere else?
Poor fucking Uzbekistan. Such a beautiful country. Trapped between Islam Karimov (the pres) and the Islamists. Karimov is so whacked-out over the Islamists and so scared shitless about them seizing power that he has taken the ultimate Iron Fist policy. And it provides him with a convenient excuse for crushing anybody else, too.
So sad considering Uzbekistan's once-status as a center of culture. Tamarlane is buried there.
Seriously, she can't go to a third country?
Nu, zayats, pogodi!
