The case against the war is more than obvious. Always was and getting more evident to "the masses" who, though just like in the anti-Vietnam War era turned solidly against the war but at the same time got more and more repelled by the sectors of the anti-war movement that I'm feeling you would have found inopportune/inconvenient to criticize.

As for the fSU for the zillionth time, during the 20's and after Comrade Khruschev's speech of '56, (which again I begin to feel you would have found awkward to welcome, not out of any symp. for Uncle Joe but, for, "no dirty laundry washing on the left, " tactical, expedient reasons) it was opening to te possibility of a true liberatory, democratic marxist/socialist society but (and I'll forego a long list of marxist books critical of the authoritarian aspects of Soviet reality and ideology...you'll never read 'em or the memoirs I've read by loyal Communists sent to the GULAG).

Not sure if you would have signed the notorious letter the week before the Stalin-Hitler Pact to The Nation by Stalinized "progressives" like Lillian Hellman, jumping all those "fascists" like Dwight Macdonald, but, like Lazare this week in The Nation letters, there is something sad and enraging in your Old Left bromides. The sector of the Old Left that the early New Left disavowed but by '67 was in eclipse as the mass public face of the Movement by the M-L idiots that Marx would have found abhorent. M.P.
