Calgary — Mike Ashar has been astonished to find out how few of his new neighbours know where their gasoline and heating oil come from.

Be it at a cocktail party or corporate boardroom, not many Americans guess that Canada — not Saudi Arabia — is their single biggest supplier of oil.

"There are very, very few people that really know," says Mr. Ashar, the head of Suncor Energy Inc.'s U.S. operations, centred in Denver. "It is shocking, a little bit."
