The Hindu article failed to mention an important number: if I remember correctly, voter turn out was about 46%. Thus, the majority of electorate didn't see the vote legitimate in the first place.

The article is correct in pointing out that Aliyev's regime had "learned the lessons" of Western support of "rent-a-crowd" revolutions.

Lastly, the article again is correct in claiming regarding the "West's lukewarm" support of the opposition. It would have been better if the Hindu had been more specific: Western NGOs that attempt to privatize American foreign policy did not attract the support of Western officialdom. Western officialdom could care less who rules Azerbaijan. What is most important for the powers-that-be is a Azerbaijan a stable country - an important geo-petro state.
