Such nonsense. Are you being ironic? Clever? Should I read your mind? I
assume that Dylan's 'promotional skills' are intact, since he's making a
good living at what he's doing. I'm sure you're okay too, since you have the
time to write about Dylan.
If I were to take you up seriously, I would point out that Dylan has thrown
away fame and fortune plenty of times -- that there's something real and
serious about his music, to which he seems committed regardless of the
fair-weather nature of his disparate audiences over four decades. What do
you make of the fact that he produced three gospel albums? A career move?
Dylan could promote himself as a sixties radical and live happily ever
after. There's no need for self-torment or creativity or anything when
you've already written 'the soundtrack' for the counterculture and almost
every movement that falls within.
Who would need to write a single other song after writing All Along the
Watchtower, Mr. Tambourine Man, Blowing in the Wind, Like a Rolling Stone,
Desolation Row, Just Like a Woman, etc. from his 'early period'? Answer: the
same one who wrote 'Changing of the Guards', 'Dark Eyes', 'Every grain of
Sand', 'Man with the Long Black Coat', etc. etc. Dylan hasn't changed -- he
was always a serious artist, and now has matured as a serious artist. His
audiences continue to change.
Having said that, Carl, I'm not taking you up seriously. You are not
serious.
