I think he's always been some sort of intellectual, or at least thought himself to be one. I was told by a friend of mine who used to be a Congressional staffer that Gore insisted on writing his enviro book all by himself, with no help from his staff. Still, it's not often you see an establishment figure like Gore criticizing the ideological state apparatus like this. It may be weak tea for us, but this guy is American political royalty. Weird.
