AMD signs x86 licensing agreements in China

Mon Oct 24, 2005

NEW YORK, Oct 24 (Reuters) - Advanced Micro Devices (AMD.N: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Monday it has signed agreements with the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) and Peking University to license AMD x86 microprocessor design technology.

The licensing of core x86 AMD Geode processor technology to Peking University, through collaboration with MOST, will contribute to China's development of low-power and embedded x86 processor technology in Greater China, the company said.

MOST will facilitate discussions between AMD and Chinese companies receiving access to x86 technology licences. AMD said it will earn revenue from licensing the AMD Geode processor to commercial entities designated by Peking University and MOST.

Additionally AMD will have access to intellectual property derived from the licensed technology and options to invest in businesses that emerge from development of AMD Geode processor-based technology in China.

AMD said it has also opened its new headquarters for China and surrounding markets in Zhongguancun Science Park.
