I thought the same thing after a few days at a cycling spring training camp 
in rural Alabama this year.  The poverty and segregation were shocking for a 
developed country.  The lack of rural commercial activity was also notable 
compared with other quiet states like Vermont.  Coincidentally or not, 
Hyundai just built a big assembly plant near Montgomery.
