Yes, my father, a rah-rah immigrant went to visit Washington D.C. and came back speechless with outrage.

Also, when I went to school in Romania, 1/2 my school was a pile of rubble -- it had been bombed in the second world war, and they had not gotten round to rebuilding it. This made it a lot of fun to play in -- way more fun than a jungle gym -- and it didn't affect my education (which continued in the part of the building that remained whole) and which was quite excellent. It allowed me to twiddle my thumbs for three years after I came to the states because the American students in their brand new shiny schools were still catching up to what I had already mastered.

I grant that Ceausescu did his best to destroy the country. But that had nothing to do with socialism. Just another tin pot dictator with delusions of grandeur.
