Angola to launch new campaign to erase adult illiteracy
The Angolan government is preparing to launch a new literacy campaign, aiming to reach all needy adults by 2015 with the aid of United Nations agencies and civil society organizations.
Pinda Simao, the deputy education minister was quoted by local media on Thursday as saying the development of the campaign's strategy and curriculum was in its "final phase."
Italy has already provided 386,000 euros (470,920 US dollars) to aid the program, he said.
Official estimates say the illiterate adults account for 58 percent in Angola's population of 14 million, almost equally divided among men and women. Illiteracy was estimated at 85 percent when the country was independent from Portugal in 1975.
