At around 12 years of age, I read Friedrich de la
Motte Fouqué's "Undine" which is a love story though
one clothed in the trappings of the German romantic
tradition (not to everyone's taste, of course).

It's a strange work, filled with a simultaneously hot
and cold melancholy and ending with the pre-ordained
precision of a noir film.

Surprisingly, it's available via Amazon.
