How about Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston? It's
pretty short (less than 200 pages), and it's 20th century. This is
more a woman's bildungsroman than anything else, but a big part of it
concerns the heroine Janie's love for and conflict with Tea Cake
(what a name!).
