Librium and Lithium are totally different. You are probably right about librium, but Lithium was the first and still perhaps the most successful of psychiatric drugs. It is a mood _stabilizer_ and for innumerable people it has brought the horrors of bipolar affective disorder ("manic depression") under control. It does have unfortunate side effects (particularly tremblijg hands), and it needs to be carefully monitored since it is extremely toxic. Nevertheless for decades countless people have been able to live at least semi-decent lives because of it. Other mood stabilizers have been introduced, particularly several drugs first intended as anti-convulsives) but for many Lithium is still the drug of choice.
