Not me. The only thing I envy about the past is steam locomotives. In
terms of social organization, there is nothing to yearn for in bygone times.
Barring human extinction, I think socialism is pretty much inevitable,
that capitalism is too inimical to both democracy and the environment to
last much longer. I prefer to look forward to that future rather than (as
William F. Buckley Jr. famously described the aim of conservatism) stand
athwart history yelling, "Stop!"
