Trivia about Killing Joke:
* They began (literally) in a '78 London unemployment line and loitered outside BBC studios to impress upon John Peel their first self-recorded EP, financed with the singer's girlfriend's money. Peel promoted it relentlessly in early '79, which led to a major record deal.
* Their 2003 song "Total Invasion" (featured in my show below, and produced by Gang of Four's Andy Gill) was recorded on the exact day that US forces began invading Iraq in 2003. It is anti-war.
* Singer/frontman/main dude Jaz Coleman is half Anglo-Brit and half Indian (mother was Indian, father Anglo-British), has lived in the Middle East, and became a Brit expatriate to live in New Zealand where he married a Maori woman. Coleman helped rewrite the New Zealand Nat'l Anthem in Maori in the late 1990s.
* Killing Joke sued Nirvana in the early 1990s for ripping off the KJ song "Eighties" in "Come As You Are," but dropped the suit after Cobain killed himself. Killing Joke, still going strong in 2006, have outlived many of the bands who've covered their songs, which include Fugazi, Tool, Metallica, Foo Fighters, others. Killing Joke toured twice w/ Joy Divison before Joy Division's singer killed himself.
* KJ frontman/composer Jaz Coleman is fluent in 5+ languages, including Arabic, and is conductor for the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to Killing Joke material he has written at least 10 classical albums, including an opera, all of which have been recorded on various labels.
