I remember reading at the time that there were concerns an American audience wouldn't get all the Moscow references, like the fact that the vampires and so forth all need official registration (propiska) to practice evil in Moscow. The book has a really cool fight scene in the restaurant in the Ostankino television tower -- I don't know if that made it to the film.
