Which is true. Most people in the United States vote against their own best interests. But acknowledging that fact should not lead to challenging democracy. In fact, I would argue that the democratic process is the best system for helping educate people to understand the nature of their self-interest and then vote for it.
People make errors when they exercise their autonomy. There is no reason to restrict that autonomy because they goof.
