I think there are quite a few old proverbs or slogans to the effect that if one is going to die, it's best to die with dignity rather than making a fool of oneself. Asking for pie in the sky is to make a fool of oneself and still die. To fight for what one has in this instance is to die with dignity -- and who knows? I'm a pessimist, but sometimes for someone to struggle does rally the troops for better things.
