Doesn't convention require that in a romantic tearjerker one of the lovers must die? And was Jack's murder simple gaybashing? His father-in-law obviously hated him and wanted him out his family's life; Jack said as much to Ennis. If he found out that Jack was having it off with a local ranch foreman, it's hardly stretching credulity to the breaking point that he would have Jack attacked and beaten, for any number of reasons.
