I don't have a dog in this fight, and I'm no great Sinophile, but I always was baffled by the whole Tibet cause. It was my understanding that Tibet was under non-Tibetan suzerainty for several hundred years prior to the 1950s, and that what many revere as 'traditional' Tibetan is actually alien in origin (laid down by empire-building Mongols, etc). Is this totally off base?
