Axshully, Marx talked about how this class -- and that is what he called it -- was interesting precisely because, at certain times in history, the bulk of them would side with one side or the other, coming over to the ruling class to support its interests or coming over to the working class to support its interests and, thereby, recognizing membership in the working class (that is, class consciousness).

Marx didn't think this was a mythical class.
