European commissioner praises human rights changes in Chechnya 18:14 | 25/ 02/ 2006

GROZNY, February 25 (RIA Novosti) - The Council of Europe's human rights commissioner highly appraised changes in the human rights situation in Chechnya Saturday. Alvaro Gil-Robles, who is leaving this post soon, said after a meeting with Chechen President Alu Alkhanov that the war in Chechnya was over. Gil-Robles urged Alkhanov to resolve the problem of the Danish Council for Refugees, whose activities in the North Caucasus republic had been suspended after the prophet cartoon scandal.

The commissioner said it was not the fault of Danish people, adding that the council, which had done a great deal to help Chechens, should be allowed to continue its work.

Alkhanov said he admitted that abductions remained a serious problem in Chechnya.

According to him, 77 people went missing in Chechnya in 2005 and 33 of them were kidnapped, as compared to 703 people kidnapped in 2001.
