Iraqi lawyer claims Tariq Aziz dying in 'dog chamber'

Cairo, January 12, 2006

An Iraqi lawyer has claimed that Iraq's former Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz is "dying" while being held by US troops in a small, dimly-lit cell "fit for dogs," a newspaper reported Thursday.

In an interview published on Thursday by the pan-Arab daily Al-Hayat, lawyer Badie Aref Ezzat said he "does not expect him (Aziz) to live more than one month as he was suffering "from a brain stroke and heart disease."

Aziz, 70, like other former regime members, is being held in a cell two metres long and one metre wide, "chambers that are fit for dogs," his lawyer said.

The former deputy prime minister was only allowed to leave the cell for short periods and his health condition, like that of some other detainees, was "miserable," said Ezzat.
