But for a discussion to develop between these two, they would need to limit their discussion to areas of common understanding. As in the role of religion in society - certainly, they would find common ground for discussion here. Or the responsibility of the citizen in society. It seems that though there would be disagreement, the 'discussion' would be rational.
But then I can see how you might be drawing some distinction between the 'role' of religion and the 'nature' of religion that I don't see.
