Hasn't St. Petersberg gone through many such changes?
As for Mumbai, it has always been called "Mumbai' by the overwhelming majority of people here. AFAIK, the Indian Left has not opposed such changes anywhere in India. Common language has been the basis for the formation for many states in India.
