Germany is a young country. It wasn't so long ago that Bavarians, Saxons, and Schwabians were regarded as somewhat distinct ethnic groups. They speak different local languages to this day.

My relatives in Schwabia tend to think that Ossies, whom they don't like, are a different ethnic group. They also think Germany is an occupied country. ;)

They are rather right-wing, though.
