Thursday, June 1, 2006 (Washington):
The Bush administration has notified Congress that it is planning to sell Harpoon Block II anti-ship missiles and related equipment and services to Pakistan. The total value of the deal is estimated at $370 million.
Notifying Congress of the impending sale, the Defence Security Cooperative Agency said that Pakistan had requested for a possible sale of 50 UGM-84L (submarine-launched), 50RGM-84L (surface-launched) and 30 AGM-84L (air-launched) Block II HARPOON missiles along with five encapsulated HARPOON Command Launch Systems and all related equipment and services.
"This proposed sale will contribute to the foreign policy and national security of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that continues to be a key ally in the global war on terrorism," said the agency.
It also claimed that the proposed sale of this equipment and support would not affect the basic military balance in the region and that there would be "no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale." (PTI)
