A friend writes ------------------------------------------- Hello, Everyone--

My apologies for forwarding you a request for political action via email--I hardly ever do this, but this is one case that is so vile and embarrassing that it seems to merit an exception. Apologies, too, if you've already acted on this, but if you haven't then please read on...

The 1965 Voting Rights Act is up for renewal and our Congress is stalling over taking any action on it. There's no earthly reason why this should be controversial other than that GOP policy-makers are being cruelly, stupidly myopic and Machiavellian in recognizing that minority voters don't seem to go for their party. If you'd like to see equal voting rights for all Americans kept intact, please go to http://www.savethevotingrightsact.org/ and sign this emergency petition telling Congress to stop playing politics with what should be only the most obvious and inviolable of all our rights.

Now--I'm not asking you to put your names on this peition because I want you to support the Democratic Party, but simply because it's the right thing to do. Our country's already fragile democracy and its already battered standing in the world's eyes will surely both take another terrible hit if this historic law is allowed to die. The mere fact that its passage has been delayed at all is deeply mortifying and can only lead one to suspect the worst--please tell Congress that this is simply not acceptable...
