And sprawl. And the almost total lack of public spaces. Unlike NYC where everything seems to be public, not just becuase of the subway, but also because almost every building has an entrace from a public street rather than from a gated yard or a driveway, and because in NYC one can actually walk and experience the city, whereas in LA one must drive in that bubble of a car that separates us from our environs.

It is no coincidence that the story of Todd Haynes' film _Safe_ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114323/ which portrays ultimate alienation, takes place in LA.

I like LA's art deco though.
