My own unscientific observations:
1. Protests are seen as more for the people going to them than as effective tools of action. Protest march = parade.
2. People believe that other routes are more effective, e.g., the Internet.
3. When protests do reveal an agressive/violent side they are immediately condemned for that posture, leaving the parade/protest as the only option.
