"Only intellectuals love poverty. Poor people love luxury" (from a Brazilian samba)
Here's a bit of Charles Mingus's version of Shortenin' Bread, that old standard (covered a million times including versions by Connie Francis and the Cramps) about how happy poor children are eating a concoction of flour, sugar, and butter:
"Who says mama's little baby likes shortnen' bread.../who says mama's little baby likes shortnen bread/Mama's little baby likes caviar.../Mama's little baby likes diamonds and pearls...Mama's little baby likes all the fine things in life"
