Sunday's demo in Perth was attended by about a thousand people, down
substantially from the time before the war began. The majority of people out
and about in downtown Perth were shopping. They weren't hostile, more like
openly indifferent or mildly curious about the people who chose to attend the
rally. About half the Aussie population are unhappy about the
invasion/occupation for various reasons, but now that the war is on, they don't
feel that demos will have an effect on the Howard government's policies. These
policies have amounted to a relentless attack on what power the workers have
been able to achieve over decades of struggle for reforms, while at the same
time beating the drums of nationalist pride. The disgruntled are waiting for
the next election. That's my take.
