Viet Nam and Japan recently agreed to extend the Joint Initiative Action Programme, which over the past two years enhanced the flow of foreign direct investment (FDI) into Viet Nam.
At a workshop convened to discuss FDI promotion and review the Viet Nam-Japan Joint Initiative in Ha Noi on Monday, Viet Nam Ministry of Planning and Investment representatives said FDI from Japan reached US$4.3 billion in 2004 and increased to $5.3 billion in 2005, ranking Japan second among investors in the country.
Oshikiri Koji, an official from the Ha Noi-based Japan International Co-operation Agency office, agreed that since the Joint-Initiative Programme began two years ago, 85 per cent of objectives laid out in the programme have been achieved. Japan has implemented a number of Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects, and is evaluating some others proposed by Viet Nam, he said.
The Viet Nam-Japan Joint Initiative, which was launched by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and his Japanese counterpart Junichiro Koizumi in 2003, was undertaken to improve Viet Nam's business environment and strengthen its economic competitiveness.
