As I understand it, Putin is Russian Orthodox, as
was Yeltsin.
I am sure that Chris Doss can speak to this question better than any of us, but I believe that since the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russian Orthodoxy has acquired a kind of semi-official status in relation to the state.
