"Whatever cold war strategic value the aircraft carrier USS Israel had is long gone. Israel is an expensive strategic liability to the US now, a valueless burden at a time that the US should be buddying up to the Islamic states that control the oil the US desperately needs."

I don't get it! What does the cold war have to do with it?

The strategic value of Israel was the same before and after the Cold War.

The question is: How does the U.S. maintain control over the vast resources in third world countries. Whether those resources are in the Middle East or in Chile the problem is the same. The difference with the Middle East is that by controlling Mid East oil one controls a large portion of the energy supply of Western Europe and other countries. Thus you control a certain portion of the economies of the other countries. That is the only difference between the way the U.S. tries to control the Mid East and the U.S. tries to control Latin America. U.S. control is maintained by propping up regimes that will cooperate with U.S. corporations, etc. The USSR was a regime that did not cooperate so it was an enemy. Israel is a regime that acts a little as if it was U.S. agent on the scene so we support it. The goals in the Middle East are the same before and after the Cold War. Not very much has changed in that regard.
