Manufacturing cuckoo clocks, what else? The cuckoo clock was apparently invented in the Black Forest village of Schönwald near Triberg, Germany. It was not of Swiss origin, despite Harry Lime's famous comment in "The Third Man" (which was improvised by Orson Welles): "In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love -- they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock." In other words, placidity has its own perils!
