Just who are "we" and how do "we" do this "rejecting"? "They" control universities and the media, and that's not going to change any time soon. So "we" had better assume that they are going to micro-analyze our footnotes (if they bother to look), and make sure they're as solid as possible. Unless you think the point is just to talk among ourselves and give up on the idea of persuading anyone else.
