So much for the "Russia closes down heroic Western human rights organizations" hysterical bullshit. Will people never learn? I hereby demand a retraction from Tom Friedman! ;)

Russian Human Rights Watch Office Resumes Operations After Re-Registration I MOSCOW. Nov 7 (Interfax) - Human Rights Watch's Moscow office has completed the re-registration procedures required by the new law on nongovernmental organizations.

"We have finally completed the re-registration procedures and we have been entered on the register under number 149, and our representatives are on their way to collect the documents," Alexander Petrov, deputy head of the organization's Moscow office, told Interfax on Tuesday.

The Moscow office had to suspend its activities, pending re- registration.

"I wouldn't say the few weeks we were closed down had a seriously impact on our projects. It was just slightly over two weeks, not a month or a year," Petrov said.

The law requires the branches of foreign nongovernmental organizations in Russia to provide accounts of their activities to the Federal Registration Service. "The rules for providing accounts have become more complicated," he said.
