Speaking of drugs and violent crime, here's what determines "career 
offender" status under the U.S. federal sentencing guidelines.

You're a career offender if you were at least 18 at the time of the 
instant offense; if the instant offense was a crime of violence or a 
controlled substance offense;  and if you have at least two prior 
felony convictions for either a crime of violence or a controlled 
substance offense.
