Thomas conveniently leaves out what happened to Crane: he was soundly defeated in the next election, in a Republican district. (He was my Rep at the time.)

What these commentators tend to pass over is the crucial hypocrisy issue. Crane had sold himself as a family values guy, who wouldn't move his family to Washington because he didn't want them to be contaminated by the cesspool of corruption and vice. That's what sealed his fate.

SCANDAL? WHAT SCANDAL? By Cal Thomas

Rep. Daniel B. Crane, (R-Ill) had an affair more than two decades ago with a 17-year-old female page. After apologizing, he said he hadn't violated his oath of office, hoped his wife and children would forgive him and announced plans to run for re-election.
