Vietnam and France have signed a French - Vietnamese soft loan valued at EUR 200 million for the construction of an urban railway line in Hanoi, reported Nhan Dan's correspondent to Paris.

Mr. CAO Viet Sinh, vice-minister of Plan and Investment of Vietnam has been received on Wednesday, October 4 at the French Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry by Mrs. Christine Lagarde, Minister for Foreign Trade.

During this meeting on, the two ministers signed the soft loan for the construction of the first urban railway line in the Vietnamese capital, thus concluding a co-operation initiated 5 years ago between France and Vietnam in this field.

The construction of the first line of urban railway transport in Hanoi has been evoked for the first time in 2002 on the occasion of the official visit of the former Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong to France.

This proposal was concretized in October 2004 by the signature of a Joint Declaration of co-operation in this field during the Vietnam official visit by French President Jacques Chirac.

The 12.5 km long, the pilot line of urban railway transport in Hanoi will connect the Hanoi central railway station to Nhon. It will be able to serve, since its beginning, 6.000 travellers per hour in 2010, to 9.000 in 2020 and 12.000 in 2030.

The total investment capital for the project is put at EUR 458 million. The construction of the railway line is expected to begin next year and it will take about five years to complete the project.
