[lbo-talk] RSF on Press Freedom

Take a look at where journalists are killed and imprisoned. You would think that Iraq (22 killed so far in 2006, <http://www.rsf.org/rubrique.php3?id_rubrique=113>; 24 killed in 2005, <http://www.rsf.org/killed_2005.php3>; 19 killed in 2004, <http://www.rsf.org/killed_2004.php3>; 12 killed in 2003, <http://www.rsf.org/killed_2003.php3>) has to rank at or near the bottom on the scale of press freedom, and yet . . . .

The ranking N° Country Score

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

137 United States of America (in Iraq) 48,50 138 Russia 48,67

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

164 Iran 89,17

[The 164th is supposed to be the fourth worst in the world -- only Turkmenistan, Eritrea, and North Korea rank below Iran.]

How can the USA _in Iraq_ get to rank above Russia, Iran, or any other country (except those that categorically do not allow the opposition press) for that matter?
