A new documentary: http://www.sonyclassics.com/whokilledtheelectriccar/

What I particularly liked about the film is the insights it gave to operations of the US monopoly capitalism. The mains message is that what kills any effort to change the status quo is not some conspiracy or secret cabal of a few wealthy men, but really collusion of many interests from consumers, to trade and industry groups, to government concerned about economic stagnation and the loss of jobs.

Too many groups benefit from the current wasteful transportation technology: oil companies selling overpriced fuel, various industries manufacturing myriad of components used to put together internal combustion engines, replacement part and service providers who would go out of business if new, simpler technologies, government obsessed with the growth of the GDP and lower unemployment rates, and finally consumers who use excessive vehicle size made possible by internal combustion engines to beef up their egos and social status.

Moreover, there is a high degree of cooperation within the capitalist class. Some capitalists are willing to forego some of their short terms profits (e.g. GM that produced a viable electric car and scraped it) to ensure long-range profits for the entire capitalist class (oil companies, parts manufacturers, etc.).

Definitely worth seeing.
