The Japanese Government has agreed to give support to and send a Special Assistance for Project Formation (SAPROF) team to Vietnam to take part in a special project to improve road transport safety.

The SAPROF team, in co-operation with the National Committee for Transport Safety, has worked out and submitted a study to the Vietnamese Government.

The SAPROF's study aims to implement a series of transport safety projects for National Highways 3, 5, 10 and 18 including providing safety equipment, consultancy and education on transport safety, and improving the capacity of transport safety law enforcement agencies in 10 related provinces and cities.

The total funding for the project is estimated at around US $50-60 million, with 70-80% of the money to be spent on safety equipment.

An emergency aid system and more modern equipment for transport safety will be provided as part of the next phase of the project. (VNA)
