There are a lot of things -- from climate change to the Iraq War to poor health of workers -- that may be "bad for the empire" in the long term, but the ruling class, especially the US ruling class, never do what middling sorts think are "good for the system" on their own. And the working class, of not only the USA but also its key allies like the UK, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, are too unorganized and unmotivated to make the ruling class do what makes sense for the system despite themselves. -- Yoshie
