Vietnam has achieved positive results in guaranteeing rights to personal freedom, especially the right to worship, said Eric G. John, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of East Asia and Pacific Affairs, on April 9.
John made the remarks at a meeting with Nguyen Thanh Tai, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, while visiting the city as part of his official visit to the country.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary said that of particular encouragement was the granting of a plethora of certificates for religious groups and organisations by the government in 2006.
Vice Chairman Tai exchanged views with the US official on socio-economic development in HCM City and a number of matters of John's concern, including immigrant labour, equitisation of State-owned enterprises, relations among localities in south Vietnam, the fight against corruption as well as the upcoming National Assembly election.
Tai said that the Government considers the fight against corruption is being reflected in the country's economic development and the massive improvement in people's living conditions.
The Ho Chi Minh City Vice Chairman went on to praise the positive developments in Vietnam-US relations, saying that the city is always supportive of initiatives and activities that contribute to boosting ties between the two countries. (VNA)
