Self-defense is a form of viglantism. And for somebody not under actual threat by the perpetrator, it would not be self-defense, but defense of others. Either way, it's vigilantism.
A criminal is one who commits a crime, or, if used perjoratively as it usually is in political discussion, a class of people diametrically opposite to the "law abiding" class. That class, when used in this sense, is largely synomynous with the class of all poor black people.
